Neil Druckmann, the creative director behind Uncharted 4 and The Last Of Us 2, praised the Uncharted trailer and expressed excitement that a new swathe of viewers will be introduced to Nathan Drake's adventures. However, the recently teased Uncharted film scenes do seem to be matching the epic scale of the games' set pieces, with a recreation of Uncharted 3's cargo plane sequence being one of the trailer's biggest moments.

Both these casting choices have proven to be controversial among fans of the games (many of whom seem to prefer cult TV icon Nathan Fillion as the treasure-hunting trickster).

This retrospective look at Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception comes right after Sony’s live-action Uncharted movie trailer revealed footage featuring MCU Spider-Man star Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his grizzled mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Vice President Christian Gyrling recalls how the development team was able to iron out glitches by running two versions of Uncharted 3 at the same time and points to the game's overgrown Chateau as the moment he realized, “ This is Uncharted.” Game Director Kurt Margenau fondly reflected on his time building the cargo plane set piece, but he considers the subsequent desert mission his favorite scene because of how it called back to films like Lawrence of Arabia and evoked the feeling of being isolated and exposed with few resources. Co-President Evan Wells recalls working on Uncharted 3’s multiplayer (which built on the foundation of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves') and explained his favorite in-game moment was Nathan wandering the Rub’ Al Khali desert after the iconic cargo plane section. The plot of Uncharted 3 was also much more personal than past entries, detailing Nathan’s past as an orphan drawn to treasure-hunting at a young age and solidifying his relationship with longtime love interest, Elena Fisher. While the word's still out on Uncharted 3’s definitive ranking in the series, the third installment of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed action franchise is notable for increasing the series' cinematic scope and featuring more action set pieces than previous Uncharted games, particularly in one blockbuster-worthy moment taking place at the tail a cargo plane.
